A GOLDEN OPPORTUNTIY: JUSTICE & RESPECT IN MINING

The Religions for Peace Inter-religious Council–Tanzania helped commission a study on the mining industry in Tanzania, A Golden Opportunity: Justice & Respect in Mining. “Gold mining is the fastest growing sector of Tanzania’s economy,” the report says. “Minerals now account for nearly half the country’s exports and Tanzania is Africa’s third largest gold producer. Yet ordinary Tanzanians are not benefi ting from this boom both because tax laws are overly favourable to multinational mining companies and because of the practices of these companies. Tanzania is being plundered of its natural resources and wealth.”

Co-commissioners of the report were African Evangelical Enterprise, Tanzania Coalition on Debt and Development, the Gender Networking Programme, Women Legal Aid Center, HAKI ARDHI, The University of Dar es Salaam, Faculty of Economics, Tanzania Ecumenical Dialogue Group, Legal and Human Rights Center, Norwegian Church Aid, and Christian Aid.
